About Course
This course presents the operating principles, applications, installation requirements, calibration procedures, data-processing practices, and quality-assurance methods associated with acoustic multibeam hydrographic survey systems. It explains how multibeam systems measure water depths across an acoustic swath and how beam geometry, vessel movement, sound velocity, sensor alignment, system latency, transducer mounting, and environmental conditions affect survey results.
The course examines the use of multibeam systems for navigation-project condition surveys, dredging measurement and payment, channel-clearance verification, shoal and strike detection, underwater structure investigations, and bathymetric mapping. Particular attention is given to transducer mounting arrangements, static offset measurements, vessel draft and settlement corrections, Patch Tests, sound-velocity measurements, bar checks, beam-width limitations, data coverage, editing, filtering, binning, and depth selection.
Quality-control and quality-assurance procedures are presented for identifying systematic errors, verifying system performance, comparing overlapping survey data, and documenting the reliability of completed hydrographic surveys. The material is based principally on guidance published by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for hydrographic surveying of navigation projects, water-control projects, and underwater structures.
