Professional Credit Guidance
Course Acceptance
Course acceptance depends on the requirements of the licensing
authority receiving the credit, the professional relevance of the
subject, and the licensee’s compliance with applicable rules.
Core Principle
The Licensing Authority Determines Acceptance
SurveyorCE provides professional continuing-education courses and
supporting documentation, but it does not make binding acceptance
decisions on behalf of state licensing boards or other regulatory
authorities.
The licensing authority determines whether a course, provider,
delivery method, subject, assessment, and number of hours satisfy
its current requirements.
The individual licensee is responsible for selecting appropriate
coursework, accurately reporting completed hours, and maintaining
the records required for renewal or audit.
Acceptance Factors
What Licensing Boards May Evaluate
Course acceptance may depend on several independent requirements.
Subject Matter
The course may need to address surveying, professional practice,
public protection, ethics, laws, rules, or another permitted subject.
Professional Relevance
The subject may need to contribute directly to the licensee’s
professional knowledge, competence, or area of practice.
Provider Eligibility
A jurisdiction may accept any qualified provider, require specific
approval, or recognize providers through another organization.
Delivery Method
Rules may distinguish live instruction, interactive online courses,
webinars, correspondence courses, or self-directed study.
Assessment and Completion
Self-study courses may need a scored assessment, identity controls,
completion tracking, or other evidence of participation.
Credit Limitations
A board may limit the number of hours earned through a particular
format, subject, activity, or provider type.
Before Enrolling
Evaluate the Course Before Claiming Credit
Review Your Board’s Rules
Confirm the required hours, permitted subjects, delivery formats,
provider conditions, and any mandatory classifications.
Review the Course Information
Compare the course description, objectives, credit hours, subject,
delivery method, and assessment with those requirements.
Request Clarification if Needed
If acceptance is uncertain, contact the applicable licensing
authority before relying on the course for renewal credit.
Retain the Determination
Preserve any written guidance or approval received from the board
with the course certificate and supporting records.
Provider Approval
Approval Systems Differ by Jurisdiction
Some licensing boards preapprove providers or individual courses.
Others do not maintain a formal preapproval program and instead
evaluate coursework according to published standards.
A provider’s approval or recognition in one jurisdiction does not
automatically establish approval in every other jurisdiction.
Similarly, the absence of a provider from a voluntary list does
not necessarily mean that the course is unacceptable.
Review the terminology and process used by the board responsible
for your license rather than assuming that every state follows
the same approval model.
Special Credit Requirements
Confirm the Required Credit Classification
A course may qualify for general professional-development credit
without satisfying a separate requirement for ethics, surveying laws,
administrative rules, health, safety and welfare, or another mandatory
subject.
Do not rely solely on a course title when determining its credit
classification. Review the description, objectives, and actual
educational content, then apply the definitions established by the
licensing authority.
Multiple Licenses
One Course May Be Evaluated Differently
A licensee holding credentials in multiple jurisdictions should
evaluate the same course separately under each jurisdiction’s rules.
A course accepted by one board may be classified differently or
limited by another.
Maintain records showing where each completed course was reported,
how many hours were claimed, and whether it satisfied a general or
special subject requirement.
Completion of a course does not guarantee that duplicate credit may be
claimed for repeating the same educational material. Check the rules
governing repeated courses and review your prior completion records
before reporting the credit.
Supporting Records
Information to Retain
Retain enough documentation to demonstrate the course subject,
provider, date, educational format, credit hours, assessment,
and successful completion.
SurveyorCE provides educational and general regulatory information.
Requirements may change, and the applicable licensing authority remains
the controlling source for course acceptance, credit classification,
reporting, exemptions, and renewal compliance.
