Adjustment and Accuracy Analysis of GPS Survey Networks
About Course
This course explains the adjustment and accuracy analysis of GPS survey networks used for engineering, construction, mapping, and control applications. It introduces the statistical terminology used in survey adjustments and explains how redundant baseline observations are reconciled to produce consistent coordinates and defensible measures of positional accuracy.
The course examines free, minimally constrained, fully constrained, and partially constrained network adjustments. It discusses rigorous least-squares adjustment procedures, approximate adjustment methods, baseline weighting, variance factors, normalized residuals, outlier testing, covariance information, error ellipses, and the interpretation of adjustment statistics. Sample networks illustrate how different constraints and weighting decisions affect the resulting coordinates and reported accuracy.
Additional topics include geocentric and geographic coordinate conversions, horizontal and vertical accuracy standards, adjustment reports, survey documentation, and geospatial metadata. The course emphasizes the professional judgment required to distinguish internal network consistency from external datum accuracy and to select adjustment procedures appropriate to the intended use of the survey.
