Nebraska Renewal Requirements
The following items are expressly stated in Nebraska statutes, Board rules, or current Board guidance unless marked as an interpretation.
Renewal cycle and total hours
- Renewal cycle Biennial. Registration renews at the end of odd-numbered years, with completed renewal forms and fees due in early January and a late-fee window through April 1.
- Required hours 30 hours of professional development within the preceding 2 calendar years, as a condition of renewal.
- Carryover Excess hours above 30 may be carried forward, not to exceed 15 hours, into the next biennium, if requested on the renewal form.
- Separate surveyor board Nebraska regulates land surveyors through a dedicated Board of Examiners for Land Surveyors, distinct from the engineers and architects board.
Mandatory subject and category caps
- Ethics or state Act At least 2 hours in an ethics course or a course on the Nebraska Land Surveyors Regulation Act is required each renewal period.
- Online cap Non-interactive or pre-recorded online, correspondence, televised, and videotaped courses are capped at 15 PDHs per renewal period.
- Society membership Membership in surveying-related societies counts 1 PDH per society per year, maximum 4 PDHs per period.
- Teaching and papers College-level teaching is capped at 6 PDHs per period; authored professional papers at 15 PDHs per period.
Online Study and Approval Rules
Online and distance education
Verified limit. Completion of on-line, correspondence, televised, videotaped, audiotaped, and other non-interactive or pre-recorded short courses is counted at 1 PDH per actual hour, with an examination required for completion unless attendance is documented. The maximum in this category is 15 PDHs per renewal period.
Practical interpretation. A surveyor may earn up to 15 of the 30 hours through non-interactive online coursework. Live interactive video conference attendance is treated differently, counting as attendance rather than as a capped non-interactive course, so it is not subject to the 15-hour cap.
The required 2-hour ethics or Nebraska Act course may be taken online and counts toward the applicable maximums.
Provider and course approval
Verified structure. Nebraska credits professional development by category rather than through provider pre-approval. Each activity must be directly related to the practice of land surveying, and the rule assigns specific PDH values and caps to each category.
Recognized categories include workshops, conferences, and seminars (1 PDH per hour of attendance); teaching at such events (2 PDHs per hour taught); college courses (30 PDHs per credit hour); non-college extension or correspondence courses (15 PDHs per credit hour); and authored papers.
Documentation of sessions. Attended sessions must be certified by the sponsoring organization, planned in advance, and supported by a record describing the content.
Records, Reporting, and Audit
Record retention and reporting
Each registrant submits a statement of PDHs obtained during the two-year period, signed to certify its correctness, on the Board’s renewal form. A registrant wishing to carry over excess hours must state this on the form, and the Board notifies the registrant by April 15 if carryover is denied or modified.
Registrants should retain a detailed accounting of the PDHs claimed, since audited registrants must produce documentation verifying each activity.
Audit and extensions
The Secretary randomly selects a percentage of renewal registrants each biennium for audit. Registrants who received extensions in the prior period are automatically audited, and the Board may audit any renewal not received on or before January 1 of the odd-numbered year.
A registrant who has not obtained the minimum PDHs may request an extension before the end of the biennium, showing good cause such as extended travel abroad, extended illness, or the death of an immediate family member. Late extension requests are automatically denied.
Exemptions, Appeals, and Status
Good-cause extensions. The Board may grant an extension for good cause, with the decision of the Board being final. The current registration is extended during the pendency of a timely, valid extension request.
Appeals. A registrant denied renewal may appeal within 30 days, with a hearing held within 90 days. The registration remains in effect during the appeal until the Board reaches a final decision.
Late renewal and cancellation. Failure to remit biennial fees when due automatically cancels the license effective the following April 1. A license canceled for nonpayment may be reinstated within one year, with the biennial fee increased 10 percent for each month or fraction of a month of delay.
Applicants after exam failure. An applicant denied registration due to failing the written examination must submit proof of 15 hours of professional development with a subsequent application, reflecting the Board’s emphasis on continuing competency.
