New Jersey Renewal Requirements
The following items are expressly stated in New Jersey statutes, Board rules, or current Board guidance unless marked as an interpretation.
Renewal cycle and total credits
- Renewal cycle Biennial. The Board sends a renewal notice at least 60 days before expiration, and a licensee may renew within 30 days after expiration with a late fee.
- Required credits A minimum of 24 continuing professional competency (CPC) credits completed during the preceding biennial period.
- Carryover A maximum of 8 CPC credits may be carried over into the next biennial renewal period.
- Credit basis One CPC credit is granted for each contact hour of an approved continuing education course.
Mandatory subjects and dual licensees
- No separate ethics minimum The surveyor requirement of 24 credits does not impose a standalone ethics-credit minimum, unlike the New Jersey engineer requirement.
- Dual PE and PLS A person licensed as both must complete at least 36 CPC credits, with at least 12 in engineering (including 2, but no more than 8, in ethics), at least 12 in surveying, and the remaining 12 in either.
- Publication cap Authoring papers or books on technical surveying subjects earns credit on a self-declaration basis, capped at 25 percent of the biennial requirement.
- Out-of-jurisdiction exam Passing a land surveying examination in another jurisdiction earns credit, capped at 3 CPC credits per biennium.
Online Study and Approval Rules
Online and distance education
Verified status. New Jersey grants one CPC credit for each contact hour of an approved continuing education course and does not impose a general cap on online coursework for surveyors. Qualifying online courses may be used toward the 24-credit requirement.
Practical interpretation. A surveyor may satisfy the full requirement through approved online coursework, provided the course and its provider are approved under the Board’s rules and the activity is relevant to the practice of land surveying.
Because credit tracks contact hours, a 2-hour approved online course earns 2 CPC credits.
Provider and course approval
Verified requirement. New Jersey uses an approval framework for continuing competency. Courses and providers are approved under the Board’s rules, and providers carry responsibilities set out in the regulations. A licensee should confirm that a course is approved for New Jersey surveyor CPC credit.
Recognized sources of credit include approved continuing education courses, teaching, authoring technical publications, and passing an out-of-jurisdiction surveying examination, each with the calculation and caps set by rule.
Licensee responsibility. The licensee is responsible for ensuring that claimed activities meet the Board’s criteria and are properly documented.
Records, Reporting, and Audit
Record retention
At renewal, a licensee provides a signed statement certifying completion of the required CPC credits, including where applicable the dates attended, credits claimed, course title and content, provider, instructor, and course location.
Licensees must maintain evidence of completion for two biennial periods after completion and submit documentation if requested for audit.
Audit and compliance
The Board audits CPC compliance and may request documentation supporting the credits certified at renewal. A licensee must respond to a Board inquiry within the time set by the Board.
A land surveyor’s renewal requires certification that the continuing competency requirements of the surveyor subchapter have been met, so a shortfall can delay or prevent renewal.
Waivers, Restoration, and Residency
Waivers. The Board may, in its discretion, waive, extend, or otherwise modify the continuing competency requirement in defined circumstances, such as hardship, on written request with supporting documentation.
License restoration. A licensee restoring a lapsed or inactive license must complete the delinquent CPC credits for each biennial period the license was suspended or inactive, with the total required to become current capped at 30 credits, or 45 for a person licensed as both an engineer and surveyor.
Out-of-jurisdiction residents. A licensee residing outside New Jersey is addressed by a specific rule provision, which a non-resident surveyor should review to confirm how the requirement applies.
Retired status. New Jersey offers retired and no-fee retired license status. A retired licensee resuming practice must submit proof of completing delinquent CPC credits, subject to the applicable maximums.
