Oklahoma Surveyor PDH Requirements

Oklahoma Renewal Requirements
The following items are expressly stated in Oklahoma statutes, Board rules, or current Board guidance unless marked as an interpretation.
Renewal cycle and total hours
- Renewal cycle Biennial, based on the licensee’s initial licensure date. Licensees may renew online up to 60 days before expiration.
- Required hours 30 professional development hours (PDH) within the 24-month biennial renewal period.
- Two reporting methods A licensee may use the standard biennial method, 30 PDH over two years with carryover, or the calendar-year method, a minimum of 15 PDH per calendar year totaling 30, with no carryover.
- Carryover Under the standard method, a maximum of 15 excess PDH may be carried forward into the next biennial period.
Mandatory subject
- Oklahoma Minimum Standards A professional land surveyor, or a dual licensee, must earn at least 2 PDH covering the Oklahoma Minimum Standards for the Practice of Land Surveying per biennial renewal period.
- No carryover for this component The 2-hour Oklahoma Minimum Standards requirement cannot be carried forward and must be earned each biennium.
- State-specific by design Because this component addresses Oklahoma’s surveying standards, it generally cannot be satisfied by a generic national course.
- Surveyor-only This 2-hour requirement applies to land surveyors and dual licensees, not to engineers who are not also surveyors.
Online Study and Approval Rules
Online and distance education
Verified status. There is no limitation on the number of hours that can be taken online. All 30 PDH, other than the Oklahoma Minimum Standards content, may be earned through qualifying online coursework.
Practical interpretation. A surveyor may satisfy the general requirement online, then add the 2-hour Oklahoma Minimum Standards course, which must cover Oklahoma-specific standards. One PDH represents at least 50 minutes of instruction.
Each activity must have a clear purpose and objective that maintains, improves, or expands the licensee’s skills and knowledge relevant to the practice of surveying.
Provider and course approval
Verified process. The Board does not pre-approve courses, activities, or providers. Each licensee must ensure that all PDH activities meet the Board’s criteria, and the Board has final authority over acceptability.
Qualifying activities must meet the rule’s criteria, including a clear purpose and objective, well-organized and sequential content, evidence of preplanning, qualified presenters, and provision for individual participant registration and recordkeeping.
Tracking option. A licensee may use a MyNCEES account and the NCEES Continuing Professional Competency Tracking service to track and report continuing education activities if selected for audit.
Records, Reporting, and Audit
Record retention and reporting
The Board allows a licensee to certify, online or by mail, that the 30-PDH requirement has been met, in lieu of submitting PDH documentation with the renewal. The licensee maintains the hours in a file or spreadsheet to be presented if selected for audit.
Licensees should keep the continuing education log and proof of attendance or completion certificates. Re-licensure applicants must submit a log form and proof of attendance verifying 30 PDH earned during the most recent 24 months.
Audit and deficiencies
If a licensee cannot certify completion of the required PDH by the expiration date, the license will not be renewed unless an approved exemption applies.
If the Board disallows claimed PDH on audit as not meeting the criteria, the licensee has 90 days after notification to substantiate the original claim or complete new activities to meet the minimum.
Exemptions and Status Options
New licensees. New licensees by examination or comity are exempt for their first pro-rated renewal period and first two-year renewal period, with certain conditions on PDH claimed during that time.
Retired status. A full-time retired licensee not practicing may claim an exemption. A licensee may claim retired status at no charge, and may do so if the license expired within the last six months. Retired-license receipts are issued with a number beginning with the letter F.
Extended non-practice. If a license revoked for non-payment or a retired license remains canceled or suspended for more than three consecutive years, the former licensee may be required by the Board to take and pass a current examination.
Other exemptions. The Board’s rules provide additional exemptions, such as for serious illness or hardship, on documentation and Board approval.
