Kansas Surveyor PDH Requirements
A source-based summary of continuing education requirements for Kansas-licensed professional surveyors.
Kansas Renewal Requirements
The following items are expressly stated in Kansas statutes, Board rules, or current Board guidance unless marked as an interpretation.
Renewal cycle and total hours
- Renewal cycle Biennial. Professional surveyors renew by March 31, with last names A through L renewing in even-numbered years and M through Z in odd-numbered years.
- Required hours 30 continuing education units (CEUs) every two years. In Kansas, one CEU is one nominal contact hour, equivalent to what other states call a PDH.
- Carryover Up to 15 qualifying CEUs may be carried forward into the next renewal period, with prior-period records required if carryover is claimed.
- Rounding CEUs are rounded to the nearest half-hour; no activity under a quarter-hour is credited.
Mandatory subjects and limits
- Kansas Minimum Standards Professional surveyors must complete 2 CEUs on the Kansas Minimum Standards, as adopted by K.A.R. 66-12-1, each renewal period.
- Health, safety, property, welfare At least 24 of the 30 CEUs must relate to health, safety, property, and welfare (HSPW).
- HSPW daily cap No more than 10 HSPW CEUs may be earned in any 24-hour period.
- Self-study cap A maximum of 5 self-study CEUs may be applied per renewal period.
Online Study and Approval Rules
Online and self-study
Verified distinction. Webinars and interactive online short courses are treated as ordinary contact-hour activities and are not subject to the self-study cap. In contrast, self-study courses, defined as third-party coursework completed with a final graded test, are limited to 5 CEUs per renewal.
Practical interpretation. The classification of an online course matters. A live or interactive webinar can count toward the full requirement, while a self-paced graded self-study course counts toward only the 5-CEU self-study allowance. Correspondence and video courses must show evidence of achievement with a final graded test.
Because 24 of the 30 CEUs must be HSPW, a surveyor should confirm that enough of the chosen coursework qualifies as health, safety, property, and welfare content.
Provider and course approval
Verified process. The Board does not pre-approve courses or activities, with one exception: it does address courses related to the Kansas Minimum Standards for Boundary Surveys and Mortgage Title Inspections. Otherwise it is the licensee’s responsibility to determine whether an activity qualifies, and the Board has final approval of CEU credit.
Qualifying activities include short courses, seminars, tutorials, workshops, correspondence and video courses, webinars, and in-house corporate training relevant to the practice. College courses convert at 15 CEUs per semester credit hour or 7.5 per quarter credit hour.
Non-qualifying activities include regular employment, CPR or first aid, real estate licensing courses, personal self-improvement, trade-show displays, and topics not relevant to the profession.
Records, Reporting, and Audit
Record retention
Recordkeeping is the licensee’s responsibility, and records must be maintained for at least four years for audit purposes. At renewal, the licensee certifies completion of the required CEUs.
Acceptable documentation includes the Continuing Education Audit Report Form and attendance verification such as completion certificates, NCEES CPC reports, or signed attendance records. Event announcements, registration receipts, emails, and unsigned logs are not acceptable proof.
Audit and cure period
The Board conducts random audits each renewal period. A licensee selected for audit must furnish documentation supporting the claimed CEUs.
If the Board finds a claimed CEU unacceptable, it notifies the licensee of the criteria not met, and the licensee has 120 days from notification to substantiate the original claim or earn replacement credits to meet the minimum requirement.
Exemptions and Status Options
First renewal. Licensees in their first renewal period are exempt from the continuing education requirement, but must still complete the renewal form, pay the fee, and attach supporting documentation for the exemption.
Military and overseas government service. Exemptions are provided for licensees on full-time active duty in the armed forces, and for those who attest that for at least 21 of the preceding 24 months they were a government employee working as a technical professional assigned to duty outside the United States.
Dual license. A licensee renewing in more than one profession must complete 20 HSPW CEUs for each profession, with at least 16 of the 20 for each being HSPW.
Inactive and emeritus status. At renewal a licensee may elect inactive status without showing CEUs, by paying the fee and submitting the form; inactive licensees may not practice. A surveyor may also choose emeritus status, using the title with the word “emeritus” but not practicing, with no renewal required.
Reinstatement. A cancelled license requires a reinstatement application with proof of 30 qualifying CEUs earned in the previous two years for Board review.
