Connecticut Surveyor PDH Requirements

Connecticut Renewal Requirements
The following items are expressly stated in Connecticut statutes, regulations, or current Department guidance unless marked as an interpretation.
Renewal cycle and hours
- Renewal cycle Annual. All Land Surveyor licenses expire January 31 each year, an unusually short cycle compared with the biennial norm in most states.
- Required hours None. Connecticut does not require continuing education or professional development hours to renew a land surveyor license.
- Renewal fee $285.00 annually for individual licensees. Land surveying firm registrations renew annually at $375.00.
- Renewal process Renewal is completed online through the Department of Consumer Protection’s eLicense portal.
Mandatory subjects
- No CE subjects Because there is no continuing education mandate, Connecticut prescribes no ethics hours, jurisprudence courses, or state-standards coursework for renewal.
- Professional conduct still applies Licensees remain bound by the Board’s Code of Ethics and by the Standards for Surveys and Maps in the State of Connecticut.
- Voluntary development Continuing education may be taken voluntarily, and many Connecticut surveyors complete coursework to satisfy other states where they also hold licenses.
- Subject to change CE requirements are set by statute and regulation; a continuing education requirement has been proposed in the legislature in the past but not enacted, so licensees should confirm current status at renewal.
Voluntary Study and Multi-State Practice
Voluntary continuing education
Verified status. Continuing education is not required for renewal of a Connecticut land surveyor license, and no hours, subjects, or formats are prescribed. Any professional development a Connecticut licensee undertakes, online or otherwise, is voluntary.
Practical interpretation. Because there is no CE mandate, there is no Connecticut approval framework, hour cap, or format restriction to satisfy. Structured coursework remains valuable for maintaining competency and for meeting the requirements of other jurisdictions.
A caution on misinformation. Some third-party summaries state that Connecticut surveyors must complete 30 PDH per period. That is incorrect; the Department of Consumer Protection imposes no CE requirement for land surveyor renewal.
Surveyors licensed in multiple states
A Connecticut licensee who also holds licenses in other jurisdictions must still satisfy each of those jurisdictions’ continuing education rules. Connecticut’s absence of a requirement does not carry over to other states.
Structured coursework remains relevant for surveyors who maintain licenses in states with PDH mandates. Certificates of completion and activity logs should be retained to the standard of the strictest state in which the surveyor is licensed, since the burden of proof in an out-of-state audit falls on the licensee.
Comity note. Some states permit a licensee to satisfy CE by meeting the requirement of a home jurisdiction; because Connecticut has no requirement, that pathway is typically unavailable to Connecticut-resident surveyors, who must meet the other state’s rules directly.
Records and Renewal Administration
Record retention
Connecticut does not require CE documentation, activity logs, or completion certificates as part of land surveyor renewal, and there is no CE audit program because there is no CE requirement.
Licensees who claim Connecticut-earned coursework toward another state’s requirement should retain completion certificates and activity logs per that state’s retention rules, commonly three to six years, since the burden of proof in an out-of-state audit falls on the licensee.
Lapse and reinstatement
A license is considered lapsed if not renewed on or before the January 31 expiration date. Practicing land surveying under a lapsed license is not permitted.
A lapsed license may be reinstated online provided a completed reinstatement application and all applicable fees are submitted no later than three years after the expiration date. A licensee who signed and sealed surveying documents during the lapsed period must provide additional information as part of reinstatement.
Retiree Status and License Types
Retiree status. Individual license holders may request retiree status through the Department. Retiree status is a formal license status change, applied for online or by paper application, and a separate application is used to restore an active license from retiree status.
Combined licensure. Connecticut issues a combined professional engineer and land surveyor license in addition to the standalone land surveyor license. Because neither profession carries a CE requirement in Connecticut, a combined licensee has no CE obligation to the state, though other jurisdictions where the licensee practices may.
Surveyor-in-training. A surveyor-in-training license does not require annual renewal; it remains valid for ten years from original issuance and serves toward the experience requirement for full licensure.
No exemption framework needed. Because Connecticut has no continuing education requirement, there are no CE exemptions for new licensees, military service, age, or hardship, as those concepts have no application to a Connecticut renewal.
