Wyoming Renewal Requirements
The following items are expressly stated in Wyoming statutes, Board rules, or current Board guidance unless marked as an interpretation.
Renewal cycle and total hours
- Renewal cycle Biennial. Renewals are due by December 31, on a two-year cycle based on the original date of licensure.
- Required hours A minimum of 30 continuing professional competency (CPC) units for each renewal period. One CPC equals a 50-minute contact hour.
- Carryover A maximum of 15 CPC units may be carried forward into the subsequent renewal period.
- Combined board Land surveyors are regulated by the Wyoming Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.
Subjects and dual licensees
- No mandated subject breakdown Wyoming’s rules do not require a set number of ethics hours or a state-specific statutes course; any qualifying activity relevant to the practice counts toward the total.
- Relevance standard Activities must be relevant to the practice of land surveying and aimed at maintaining, improving, or expanding the licensee’s skills and knowledge.
- Dual licensees A person licensed as both an engineer and surveyor must earn a minimum of 10 CPCs in each discipline, with a minimum combined total of 30.
- NCEES CPC standard A licensee may meet the renewal requirement by submitting CPCs that comply with the NCEES CPC Standard for the current and previous calendar year.
Online Study and Approval Rules
Online and distance education
Verified status. Wyoming does not impose an online limitation for surveyors; all courses may be taken online. The full 30 CPC may be earned through qualifying online coursework relevant to the practice of land surveying.
Practical interpretation. A Wyoming surveyor may satisfy the entire requirement online, provided each activity qualifies under the Board’s rules. One CPC equals a 50-minute contact hour, and one CEU equals ten contact hours.
Because there is no mandated subject breakdown, a surveyor has flexibility in choosing qualifying activities, subject to the dual-license split where applicable.
Provider and course approval
Verified process. The Board does not pre-approve course providers or courses. Each licensee is responsible for ensuring that the courses taken meet the Board’s requirements.
A licensee may also rely on the NCEES CPC Standard as a route to meeting the requirement, submitting CPCs that comply with that standard for the current and previous calendar year.
Licensee responsibility. Because there is no pre-approval, the licensee confirms that each activity qualifies and retains documentation.
Records, Reporting, and Audit
Record retention
The responsibility of maintaining records to support credits claimed rests with the licensee. These records must be maintained for a period of three years, and copies will be requested by the Board if the licensee is randomly selected for audit.
Records should document the activities, dates, and CPC units earned, and, for dual licensees, the split between disciplines.
Audit and deficiencies
The Board randomly selects licensees for audit and reviews the documentation submitted. If an applicant does not provide satisfactory documentation or request Board review, the application may be denied.
CPCs earned and submitted in response to a notice of deficiency may not also be used to demonstrate competency in the next renewal period.
Exemptions, Comity, and Reinstatement
New licensees. A new licensee is exempt from the CPC requirement until after the first renewal period. After issuance of an initial license, the licensee renews by December 31 of the following year, and during the first renewal period may carry over a maximum of 15 CPCs.
Uniformed services and hardship. Exemptions for licensees performing services in the uniformed services are governed by Wyoming statute, and a licensee experiencing physical disability, illness, or other extenuating circumstances may petition the Board.
Comity. Comity applicants must pass a written examination on professional ethics and Wyoming licensing laws. The Board’s comity list identifies states that require at least 15 CPCs annually or 30 CPCs biennially.
Reinstatement. A licensee reinstating must show CPCs complying with the Board’s rules, generally 30 CPCs within two years of the application if licensed elsewhere, or 15 CPCs for each year since the last renewal. A license expired more than two years may require obtaining a new license.
